Introduction About the artist.... Shirley Gipson has always been interested in art, color and design and retired early to pursue her long time passion of oil painting. She now works as a full time artist in her studio located in Round Rock, Texas. Shirley loves the challenges of capturing the beauty and unique qualities of objects in still life paintings and prefers the traditional realistic style and technique of the old masters. She works from real life with special studio lighting, which provides controlled natural light. Her aim is not photorealism but she strives instead for a realistic, artistic interpretation of the still life subject. Shirley prefers to include objects in her still life works that induce a memory or emotional connection to a past era. To accomplish this she often chooses antique pottery, linens and various household items from her own personal collection and some borrowed from local antique dealers as her subjects. She then focuses on a strong contrast of light and dark to further influence the viewer’s mood.
