| Introduction | Ever since my dad brought me to the first movie I ever saw, “Three Coins in a Fountain,” at the Clover Theatre in Manila in 1955 (with Dorothy MacGuire, Jean Peters, and Louis Jordan), I’ve followed films as though they chronicled not only the times but also my own story. How many times in my adult life have I caught myself humming that song? And when I finally threw my own coin at the Trevi Fountain in Rome, I remembered whence it all began. Undoubtedly that first, awesome viewing planted the seed which turned me into a film buff. Generations later, Manila Bulletin editor Nestor Cuartero, upon the recommendation of award-winning film director Elwood Perez, a common friend of long standing, gave me a break and published my first film review. Wow, a movie critic! The feeling has never left me. It’s the sort of wonderment I’d like to share with you, gentle reader, as you and I create this space and time together. |
