Introduction	Ever since I was a little girl I've known that it is in life's darkest and most desperate times that we are able both to give and to receive extraordinary acts of beauty, compassion, and joy. I also know from many experiences that the natural world offers us abundant insight, peace, and mystery—and we don't need any training or expertise to benefit from it. I love mythology, the many and brave ways that people seek to transcend what troubles them, great writing, and getting lost and finding my way. I'm an explorer of inner and outer worlds. I've camped alone in the Arctic, studied classical Indian dance, and worked as a life-drawing model, a streetsweeper, and an award-winning multimedia producer. I'm the author of THE WORLD IS A WAITING LOVER: DESIRE AND THE QUEST FOR THE BELOVED and the director of Vision Arrow, leading programs internationally that combine adventure travel, the mythic quest, and the search for meaning. I live with my husband, Andrew Gardner, a potter and rustic furniture maker, in rural northeastern Pennsylvania, an area currently under assault by gas drilling.
