Tom's Ride Updates

About me

Introduction In July 2006, Tom Maddox was hit on his bicycle by a motorist in Palo Alto, CA. He and a friend were riding on a road frequented by cyclists and were going downhill at a good pace—probably close to the speed limit which is easy to do on a bike. The motorist passed him on a curve and over a double yellow line, and cut back in too quickly. She hit Tom with the back of her car and knocked him off balance and he fell to the pavement. His injuries were so extensive that he never regained consciousness. To help us deal with this tragedy, we decided that if Tom couldn’t be with us on our cross country ride, we would do the ride in his honor. Although we’d much rather have him here—we know he’d like the idea of doing something challenging that will help other people.
