Elizabeth and Thomas

About me

Location British Columbia, Canada
Introduction About Thomas and Elizabeth: We live on our 37’ sailboat and invite people to join us when they can. We created this blog to keep in touch with family and friends and share stories as we sail the BC coast. During the winter, La Sonrisa is based in the Lower Mainland and the Gulf Islands, during the summer out of Crippen Cove, Digby Island, Prince Rupert Harbour. The first posting on April 30,07 “Welcome to La Sonrisa” tells more about us. You can contact us at ebeale@telus.net
Interests About The Sustainable Coast Project: The Sustainable Coast Project is centered on the sailboat La Sonrisa II, Thomas Harding and Elizabeth Beale. Thomas, son of a pioneer Prince Rupert family, was born and raised on the Coast. Elizabeth has been in search of, and participated in building, sustainable community for over 40 years, ever since emigrating from Virginia in the 1960s. La Sonrisa II operates on two basic principles: Simple Abundance and Participatory Ecology. Simple Abundance means low-tech: sailing rather than motoring, working the winds and currents, anchoring rather than tying up. Sailing on La Sonrisa means eating simply, gathering and producing food as we go (seafood, wild greens, berries, mushrooms; baking bread, making pasta, sushi, pickles, drying, canning): sailing/walking lightly on ocean and shore. Participatory Ecology (as opposed to museum ecology, “look but don’t touch”) means getting involved, entering the neighbourhoods into which we sail with respect for the creatures who live there—animals, birds, sea creatures, plants, humans past and present; seeking to become part of the neighbourhood, sharing food and resources in a sustainable way.
