| Introduction | When I was little my father would come home from work and find my toys and books scattered from one end of the house to the other. He would announce 'Everything's gone all Katywhumpus in here!' For most of my life I thought he made the word up. But then I heard someone else say 'cattywhumpus' and I did some investigating. The basic definition is 'askew' (think cattycorner). There are multiple ways to spell it and no one knows where it originated (though one thing I read attributed it to Mark Twain but I couldn't confirm that). |
