| Introduction | The Library has its roots in a collection of books borrowed in 1914 from the Equal Franchise Society and the State Education Division. These books were loaned by Mrs. Gustave DeVere to the residents of the area. On March 11, 1916, the Lake Ronkonkoma Free Library was established and in the Fall of 1917, as an association library, moved into a new building on Hawkins Avenue. In 1961, in order to expand services, the library became a school district library, and changed its name to the Sachem Public Library. The library, as it exists today, was established in May 1966 under a permanent New York State Charter to provide free service to the residents of the Sachem Central School District. The present building on Holbrook Road in Holbrook, New York was built in 1961, extensively renovated and expanded in 1983, then once again renovated and expanded beginning in October 1998. |
