Introduction From 1999 until 2018 I was the Chief Executive of Thames Reach, a charity supporting homeless and vulnerable people based in London which operates collaboratively with other organisations, both nationally and internationally. In 2018 and 2019 I worked at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), leading on initiatives to reduce and end rough sleeping and wider forms of homelessness. This blog seeks to explore the reality of wrestling with the challenges involved in helping people to escape homelessness for good. The lives of homeless and socially excluded people are frequently complex and chaotic. I've learnt much from numerous people who have experienced homelessness and the problems associated with it, many of whom went on to become work colleagues at Thames Reach. This blog is intended to show the dilemmas, doubts and mistakes which are part and parcel of working in the field of homelessness, as well as the triumphs and successes.
Interests Homelessness, rough sleeping, drugs and alcohol, voluntary sector, Third Sector.
