Introduction Theodore Brown is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and Founding Director Emeritus of the famous Arnold and Mabel Beckman Institute at Illinois, devoted to interdisciplinary science. He also served as Vice Chancellor for Research and Dean of the Graduate School at Illinois. He has long been interested in the cognitive, philosophical and social aspects of science, and authored several books, including Making Truth: Metaphors in Science and Imperfect Oracle: The Epistemic and Moral Authority of Science Most recently he has written an historical novel, The Beauty of their Dreams, a multi-generational tale situated in the tumultuous first half of the 20th century, available online.
Interests Exercise, environmental affairs, reading, movies, music of all kinds, family (we have four children, eight grandchildren and -- at last count, nine great grandchildren) sharing ideas and opinions on current affairs with friends.
Favorite Movies Too many to list. If I had to choose something to take to a desert island where I'd be alone for a long time, I'd take all the seasons of Justified, Bosch, Fargo and maybe Westworld.
Favorite Music Chamber music, mainly classical; rock and roll, old and new alternative, and most of all, jazz.
Favorite Books Einstein by Walter Isaacson, Galatea 2.2 by Richard Powers, Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, Any Human Heart by William Boyd, the English Patient by Michael Ondaatje.
