| Introduction | A little introduction that my creative writing professor, Dr. Jaeger, about me: Grew up in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and moved to Springdale, Arkansas at thirteen. She is addicted to shopping. She’s been writing as long as she can remember. She was writing before she was speaking. She was shopping before she was writing. She’s been writing since before she was born. In fact, when Bernice was still in the nest of her mother’s womb, her mother would call strangers over to touch her belly. “The baby writes.” Pride filled her voice, though occasionally she winced as if jabbed with a sharp pencil. Linguists the world round came and knelt down in front of the belly that was soon to be Bernice. They placed their hands on the belly and attempted to decipher the writing, like the game we used to play writing on one another’s backs. “Water buffalo!” one said. “Yap Ah Loy.” Another exclaimed, One frowned and said, “I don’t care if the devil wears Prada, I will too!” ‘Gucci, Gucci, Goo,” said Bernice’s mother. And indeed, after Bernice was born, the linguists deciphered the stretch marks, which read like a shopping list. |
