Introduction Lachlan Forrow, MD is Director of Ethics Programs and a palliative care physician at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He serves as President Emeritus of The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, and past President (2010-2013) of the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, Gabon. Dr. Forrow has lectured widely and published numerous articles and book chapters on issues in medical ethics, palliative care, and the social responsibilities of physicians. His work has appeared in JAMA, NEJM, Annals of Internal Medicine and other leading publications. Dr. Forrow and his wife Susan Reidy Forrow live in Newton, Massachusetts, and have four adult children, his favorite examples of why young people give hope for the future: Melissa Reid Forrow (26, studying to become a social worker); Aden Williams Forrow (25, a PhD student in Applied Math and Biophysics at MIT); Avery Burch Forrow (23, considering a career in medicine); and Lauren Margaret Forrow (20, a junior at Macalester College, and possible future high school teacher or maybe lawyer).
