Introduction When I was in sixteen, I became fascinated by Martin Luther King, Jr's activities to bring awareness to white Americans of the unjust plight of African Americans. I had a romantic (and erroneous) idea that marrying a black man would somehow help the cause. By the time I met and then married a black man, I had dated men from several ethnic backgrounds, and realized that the criteria for a good husband has little to do with the exterior appearance of the person. Cultural differences, however, can present a real challenge. The birth of my son is the most important event of my life, not only because I, like most mothers, consider it so, but his existence is evidence of my "rebellion" or "intrusion" depending upon the background of the viewer. My love for him has forced me to grow up, to deepen and expand my spiritual understanding of myself and the world that confronts me and my choice. Mother love AND father love holds the world together as it seems to be falling apart.
