| Favorite Movies | I have long lists of film favorites in all categories. My favorite directors are (With examples) Tony Richardson (Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner), Akira Kurosawa (Dersu Uzala, Seven Samurai), Truffaut (400 Blows, Shoot the Piano Player), Jean Renoir (Grand Illusion), Antonioni (Blow Up), Polanski (all), Huston (Maltese Falcon, African Queen, Treasure of the Sierra Madre), Cassavetes (Killing of a Chinese Bookie, A Woman Under the Influence), Hitchcock (all), Mike Nichols (most), Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies, Happy Go Lucky), and Mel Brooks (all), to name just a few. I like Johnny Depp's movies (Alice in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands, Gilbert Grape, Pirates #1). I like Sean Penn (Milk, Deadman Walking, Thin Red Line, I Am Sam), I love King's Speech, new Jane Eyre, Harold and Maud, Black Orpheus, The Baghdad Cafe, Closely Watched Trains, American in Paris (w Gene Kelley & Leslie Carron), Snatch, Shawshank Redemption, Blues Brothers, Walk About, Groundhog Day, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Pride and Prejudice (Both recent versions), Smoke Signals, Super Bad, The HBO John Adams series, Grand Canyon with Danny Glover. The list goes on. I like cartoons, animation, documentaries, too. |
| Favorite Music | I feel that music is the best thing we do as humans. I like most kinds of music. Classical is high on my list. Beethoven, Sibelius, Chopin, Haydn, Shumman, Bach, Mendelsohn, etc. I like classic rock, rock, folk, blues, jazz, opera, the Beatles (their accoustic stuff), Joan Baez, Aimee Mann, Neil Young (the newly digitized live albums from Massey Hall and Filmore East), Dylan, Cat Stevens, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Muddy Waters, Brownie McGee, Pete Seeger, Be Good Tanyas, Beth Horton, CSN, Pink Floyd, Cold Play, Emmy Lou Harris (Red Dirt Girls), Fats Domino, George Harrison, U2, Sting (Fields of Gold), Janis Joplin, Mungo Jerry (Summertime), and a lot of new artists like Jay Z, Drake, etc. on and on.... |
| Favorite Books | A lot of faves. Too many to list including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, art, science and natural history, black and white photography (Paul Strand, Dorothea Lange, Cartier-Bresson, et al.) A.A. Milne's When We Were Very Young, Wind In The Willows, Sand County Almanac, Dylan Thomas', Robert Frost's, W. B. Yeats', Mary Oliver's, Marge Piercy's, Sylvia Plath's poetry, Women in Love, Passage to India. I love mountain climbing stories, adventure, I like the classics, British 18th, 19th centuries, 20th century American, current British and American authors, Japanese, South American, French, Russian, some German, on and on. I read all the time. |
