| Introduction | My name is Tom Dawson and I am 24years old. I have been living in Grantham Foyer since January. I became homeless towards the end of the year 2010 after a breakdown in relations with my partner and also my family.I was offered a place at Grantham Foyer. This proved to be a vital lifeline for me.I have been given support in many aspects of my life and can now to look forward to the future.Earlier this year I was given the opportunity to apply for a place on the Build For Better Lives trip to South Africa this June. After an interview and a training day in Nottingham I was offered a place on the trip. The trip is for two weeks in the KwaZulu Natal region to work with the charity Habitat for Humanity building housing for people on low incomes. I believe this to be a once in a life time opportunity and am really looking forward to experiencing different cultures and meeting new people. I think it will definitely put things into perspective for me and be a real eye opener to the struggles of people living in much more challenging environments than my own. As well as having the chance to help others I think the trip will really help me to realise the value of my own life. |
