| Introduction | To look at my life, even from the most proximate perspective, you wouldn't see my secret. You would see a determined and adventurous graduate student. You would see a girl with a professed dedication to environmental sustainability and social equality, who aspired with indefatigable idealism to make the world a better place. You would see someone who exercised daily and adored cooking delicious, healthy meals to share with those around her. You would see someone who was head-over-heels in love with a most worthy boyfriend, who adored her parents and sisters, and who kept in close contact with a steadfast circle of lifelong friends. What you wouldn't see is the guilt, shame, and fear that permeate my existence. What you wouldn't see is that which I have kept covered, albeit to varying degrees, for the past ten years: I am bulimic. |
