Introduction Ray Scally is widely published in many books and journals in the UK and internationally including the Birding Frontiers Challenge series bird identification guides by Martin Garner. Both ‘Autumn’ and ‘Winter’ books sold out with rave reviews and are now rarities, the cover and many internal illustrations for the ‘Birds of Spurn’ which was the BB/BTO Best Bird Book of the Year 2016 and Rare & Scarce Birds in Cheshire which was runner up. He has illustrated publications and articles for the BTO, Poyser, British Birds, Birdguides and several nature reserve information boards for various organisations like Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Bradford Council, amongst others. 2016 started his first foray into the American market with the cover for the Cape May Bird Observatory annual report. His pictures are based on true life observations. All the backgrounds exist in some form or other and he rarely illustrates birds he has not seen. At present he spends most of his birding time in Manchester, Derbyshire and Cheshire amongst other hotspots in the UK. He has travelled extensively in Europe, North Africa, Middle East and North America in search of birds.
