Introduction | James "The Hound" Marshall is a former WFMU deejay (1985-97), music writer and bar owner (Lakeside Lounge NYC, Circle Bar, New Orleans). He has contributed articles to dozens of mags and newspapers including the Village Voice, NY Times, LA Weekly, Spin, Penthouse Forum, New York Rocker, Newark Star-Ledger, East Village Eye, High Times (columnist for ten years), Kicks, and worse. He also wrote liner notes to CD re-issues by Larry Williams and Johnny Guitar Watson, Ray Price, Eric Ambel, Challenge Records,The Okeh R&B Box, and others as well as compiling three volumes of the early rock'n'roll compilations Jook Block Busters (Valmor). At age 17 he edited two issues of the punk fanzine New Order (1977) He was born in Paterson, N.J. and raised mostly in Broward County, Florida, moving to New York City at age 18 in 1977 and has resided there ever since except for 1998-2002 when he split his time between New York and New Orleans. He has been acclaimed in print in the New York Times, Village Voice, Time Out New York, New York Magazine,The Manhattan Catalogue, and other publications you wouldn't be caught dead reading. |
Interests | I collect records, books, photographs, old magazines, Red Army Faction/Baader-Meinhof emphera, anything with Mel Lyman in or on it. Photos of Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin. Opiates. I am a semi-recluse. |
Favorite Movies | Tod Browning especially West Of Zanzibar, The Unholy Three and Freaks. DeMille's Sign Of The Cross, Kenneth Anger, German films from the 20's and 70's, especially anything by Herzog, Jules Dassin, Anthony Mann, Don Siegel, Jack Smith, Shirley Clarke, Donald Cammell's White Of The Eye and Performance, Tim Carey's The World's Greatest Sinner, Door To Door Maniac, Je t'aime moi non plus, Who Killed Teddy Bear, Fritz Lang, anything w/Brigitte Bardot, Robert Mitchum, Tuesday Weld or Bill Holden in it. Favorite movie of the 21s century so far is City Of God My favorite recent movie is A Prophet. |

Favorite Books | Graham Greene, Celine, Chester Himes, Cormac McCarthy especially Blood Meridian, Melville, Dostoyevsky (especially The Devils), Flannery O'Conner, William Lindsay Gresham, Gavin Lambert, Nelson Algern, Hubert Selby Jr., Madison Smart Bell's trilogy on the Haiitian slave revolt, John Gilmore, Horace McCoy, Raymond Chandler, but I mostly read non-fiction, especially history (anything on the 13 Century, Mongol Empire, Borge and Medici popes, Black Death, anything about Asia, Roman history, true crime, especially 19th century American crime), also collect photography books, 50's paperbacks (JD and drug themes), anything about Mel Lyman, the Baader-Meinhof/RAF/SPK, discogaphies, old medical and reference books, old magazines, anything on phreneology, A.
