| Introduction | After chatting with a critical mass of people who had had their hearts broken through love affairs in Second Life, I finally sat down and wrote the first draft of Love, Virtually. I had been thinking about writing about online relationships since the 1990s, when I first began to interact online at a place called Lambda MOO. I prefer to keep my virtual life and my "real" life separate, so I post under the name of my Second Life persona. I am not an academic, but I have a master's degree and have read scholarly works in the social sciences, including psychology. I am not a professional writer, although I have had a few things published over the years. My goal is to learn about what others' experiences have been in interacting online, and to offer the benefit of that experience to others. I live in Los Angeles with my husband and young son. |
