| Introduction | Nigel explains how the Checkmate Sailing Team came about: "The Checkmate name came from Dad's first race boat, an MG RS34 he bought in 1985. Every penny we had went into that boat and Dad made a fantastic job of fitting it out at home himself. We had lots of fun with Checkmate over the 5 years we owned her, making many new friends on both sides of the Irish Sea. Money was always tight but Dad always somehow ensured the boat was immaculately prepared, not easy when she was kept over 100 miles from home. When we first received backing from Dickies for our own boat in 1999, we had little money for anything other than the absolute basics yet we were determined to campaign the boat in the most professional manner possible. This was very much the way Checkmate had been run so it seemed appropriate to adopt the Checkmate Sailing Team name. Many of the team have either sailed on the original Checkmate or competed against us, all have become close friends along the way." |
