Introduction I began my writing career as a jazz critic and interviewer, and served as Music Editor for Manhattan’s trend-setting arts newspaper, the Soho Weekly News. My writings on jazz and popular music appeared there from 1974 to 1982, as well as in the Village Voice, down beat, Changes, Different Drummer, Playboy, Melody Maker, and Swing Journal (Japan). "Groovin’ at Slugs’: A Life in the Downtown Manhattan Music Scene, 1966-1982" describes the years I spent listening to jazz, punk, new wave, and other music of that remarkable era. Although I wrote mainly about jazz, my job as Music Editor caused me to go to rock clubs including CBGB, Max’s Kansas City, the Mudd Club, Hurrah, Danceteria, and others to keep tabs on the music scene. I came to love both new wave/punk and loft jazz performers and the insatiable music they made. At the same time I was living a fairly chaotic life in the Village, excerpts of which appear in this memoir.
