Introduction Hi there! Thanks for checking out my writing. I'm an author & freelance magazine writer, a school teacher, and a licensed lay worship leader in the United Church of Canada. I am the author of two books for adults, Alphabet of Faith (Wood Lake Books) and Field Notes: A City Girl's Search for Heart & Home in Rural Nova Scotia (Nimbus). I am also the author of a children's picture book, I Built A Cabin (Running the Goat Books). I believe everyone has a fascinating story, and a hunger for spirit. I'm driven by curiosity, confidence and courage, but guided by my heart.
Interests Here's a weird one (but not really considering how UNIVERSAL it is): I like talking about dying and death. Yep, I'm a nightmare at dinner parties! My father was a funeral director and I was present with him when he passed away (after living with dementia for 7 years) so I believe we all deserve a good death, and a good funeral. The only way to die well and to have an unforgettable send-off is to talk about dying and death -- never a favourite topic at any time. Oh, well.
Favorite Movies I need to get a T-shirt made with this slogan on it: "Queen of Obscure Cultural References"! My poor students -- I quote from shows and movies and songs of the 70s, 80s and 90s!
Favorite Music I always say that if/when I develop dementia, the best way to divert me if I'm not behaving well is to play ABBA! That's the music I most associate with my childhood and I can't help but sing and dance when I hear those familiar songs.
Favorite Books I read from a variety of genres. I love mysteries and women's fiction, and I read a lot of memoirs and non-fiction, including books on faith and spirituality. I recommend Sue Monk Kidd's novel, The Book of Longings, and three non-fiction (from many faves): Sarah Bessey's Jesus Feminist, Craig Greenfield's Subversive Jesus, and Beth Allison Barr's The Making of Biblical Womanhood.
