About me

Introduction Hi! My name is Alun Brown and I’m a 21st century heretic. The definition of a heretic, according to the Oxford Online Living Dictionary, is “a person believing in or practicing religious heresy” or “a person holding an opinion at odds with what is generally accepted”. Needless to say, I feel I qualify on both counts. Firstly, I subscribe to no established religious belief or orthodoxy. While I am happy to accept that most religions contain some deep and profound wisdom to a greater or lesser extent, for me they are all ultimately self-limiting and potentially dangerous. Secondly, I am generally equally sceptical of orthodox worldviews. For me, if the established, academic ways we perceive reality are so freaking clever, why is the world in such a mess? Why is it being run by sociopathic lunatics? Why are so many of us so miserable and cynical and confused? Very interestingly, the origin (etymology) of the word “heretic” comes from the Greek “hairetikos” (αἱρετικός), meaning “able to choose”. I am a 21st century heretic because I choose to have an expanded sense of what is possible, and because I choose to perceive reality in an unorthodox way. Welcome to my blog!
