| Introduction | I really treasure my rural Michigan upbringing. It is a rich source of inspiration to me. To be sure, there were thorns. There were health perils. There were crowded rooms. Yet, despite these unfairytale-like aspects of our rural life there were charming elements. The smell of home-made bread often greeted me as I disembarked the school bus. Home canned goods nourished us year-round. Dad's orchids nourished our senses. Fishing trips to the Huron River or Lake Erie were frequent and pleasant. Unlike my 10 older siblings, I found it fairly easy to get quiet moments to create. The neighbor's barn loft, the bank of the creek, the roof...all provided vantages from which to contemplate the meaning of life and to sketch the world. Both of my parents and my many siblings have encouraged my artistic pursuits. To my Creator, I give thanks and honor for my gifts. To my parents and to my brothers and sisters who kept me sane with their humor and grace, I offer my gratitude and love. |
