| Introduction | My daughter Samantha was born on January 5th, 2008 with a VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect - large hole in her heart), that got closed via open heart surgery at 5 months. After that she needed a pacemaker to regulate her rhythm, but otherwise, we thought her heart was strong and healthy. As it turned out, she must have sustained some kind of injury to her heart either from the surgery or her pacemaker (or some unknown source). The injury went undetected for 6 months as her heart grew larger and weaker. She ended up in cardiac arrest on December 10th, 2008 and suffered severe brain damage as a result of the arrest. After spending 5 weeks in the PICUs at Fairfax and Pittsburgh and exhausting all other reasonable pathways, we ended up electing to withdraw life support. She died in my arms on Jan 18, 2009 at the age of 12 months. I have a wonderful husband ("hubby") and three other amazing kids: BL1 (born 2002), BL2 (2004) and BL3 (2006). I decided to start this blog as a way of dealing with my grief and trying to make some kind of sense of it all. I have a lot to say. I hope it helps. |
