| Introduction | "If growing up is painful for the Southern Black girl, being aware of her displacement is the rust on the razor that threatens the throat. It is an unnecessary insult." Welcome, Dear Readers, to Unnecessary Insults! I connected with the above quote from Dr. Maya Angelou’s autobiography, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," the moment I read it. "Ahhhh! I thought. That's what this frustration is about - the unnecessary insults." I've come to understand that Life throws “unnecessary insults” at everyone. They come in varying situations and severities, but we all receive them. I want to transform my "unnecessary insults" - the unpleasant, hurtful, upsetting, downright rude experiences - into growth, healing, and awareness. This blog includes stories, essays, poems, pictures, and random thoughts. Some days my writings are positive and upbeat, and some days they are damn depressing. I am human. Life merits a wide range of emotions, and I want to live and write authentically. -LeKechia Lyshell |
