| Introduction | Babies, children, teenagers, adults, middle-aged people, and the elderly who have disabilities and other challenges—we all want the same thing: to live our lives for as long as we can, just like everyone else. For most of my adult life, I’ve followed the Mencap website to learn more about the facts surrounding disabilities and other related issues. At one point, it was reported that most people with a learning disability only lived to around 50 years old. I’m proud to say that I’m one of the people who has lived longer—I’m now 55. And I believe I’m not alone; there are likely many others with learning disabilities who are living longer, healthier lives and are even older than me. That’s why it’s so important that people with learning disabilities receive the right support to stay healthy, including access to annual health checkups—no matter where they live in the world. Just like everyone else, we deserve the chance to live full, long, and healthy lives. |
