Introduction I retired as editor of the Odessa (Texas) American in July 2006 after a 33-year career as a newspaper writer and editor and assistant professor of journalism. My newspaper work included stints covering courts and government as reporter for newspapers in California, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. In the early and mid-1980s, I was an assistant city editor and wrote editorials for the Los Angeles Daily News; and an editorial writer for the Omaha World-Herald. While completing an M.S. degree at Iowa State University I worked as an instructor on the mass communication faculty. After graduating in 1984, I joined the journalism faculty at Northwest Missouri State University as an assistant professor. For much of the second half of my career, I was a managing editor, editorial page editor and editor of daily newspapers in the Copley and Freedom Communications chains. Since retiring, I've been studying and writing about white-collar crime and government's ascendant police powers.
