| Introduction | We are the 40 graduating students of the Grand Academy of Lagado. The Academy is dedicated to the advancement of speculative knowledge through practical mechanical means. It’s most notable invention is certainly the very same Scribe-Frame which we are using to write our contributions to this Blog.The frame is composed of several tiny bits of wood linked together by slender wires. On every bit of wood is written all the words in the English language in their several moods, tenses, and declensions, but without any order. Each student operates one of the forty iron handles fixed round the edges of the frame to change the disposition of the words. When three or four words appear together that might make part of a sentence, they are dictated to scribes. This work is then repeated, and at every turn the engine is so contrived that the words shift into new places. Many volumes of broken sentences in large folios are being collected and pieced together to provide the world with a complete body of all arts and sciences. |
