Introduction I am an artist/painter and youth and community worker from Cape Town, South Africa. I began my art making in 1997 after being inspired by local artists and activists who used their creative mediums as social and political tools, highlighting inequalities pre and post Apartheid. I was a founding member of the arts collective ‘UMSI’ which enabled young black South African artists access art funds and galleries. This collective has since lead to the global collective ‘Gugulective’. As well as making and exhibiting my own work, I was involved in community art based projects running workshops in SA, Germany and the UK. Since my move to the UK in 2005 I have exhibited and completed 2 artist in residence. I currently work full time as a learning mentor at a school for pupils with emotional and behavioral difficulties. Outside of work I am in the process of founding a community project called ‘Leegate Arts Project’. I have a Dip HE in youth and community work from Goldsmith University, London. Gaining a BAPP will enable me to continue on to a teaching qualification course. My ultimate goal is to be fully qualified to teach art in both formal and informal settings.
