| Introduction | Infantile Spasms is one of the “catastrophic childhood epilepsies” because of the difficulty in controlling seizures and the association with mental retardation. While the seizures are often, ‘little’, the child usually may have a cluster or even a single spasm, often looking like they have been startled, make no mistake, this form of epilepsy has BIG consequences. Often times, these seizures can occur over 100 times a day. In addition, it almost will certainly cause developmental regression and cause the brain to have chaotic brain waves, known as hypsarrhythmia. Therefore, Savion’s brain is almost often in a chaotic state, which causes an inability to organize information. This is a frustrating form of epilepsy because it is very difficult to treat! |
