| Introduction | Working as a School Counselor has been a very rewarding experience. Participating in students’ lives is an honor and an invitation to learn from others. One of the things that I have learned is that we are not as connected to the earth as we have been in the past. Richard Louv writes of children being affected by Nature Deficit Disorder. Although this concept may sound foreign to us, the effects on learning are astronomical. In addition, connectedness to the land and community may be scarified and the pervasive negative impact is felt. Building green schools is just one way that we can work to remedy this problem. The challenge is greater and more complex, but as we look at sustainability as a way to nourish the earth and our souls, the effort is well worth the strife. |
