| Introduction | After retiring from 41 years of dentistry, it was time for me to do something creative involving a component of exercise and ecology. With sufficient time and reasonable health, I headed out, to ride my bicycle on trails only; traversing America by avoiding highways, busy roads and streets. I named this adventure, TAvRTO,an acronym for "Traversing America via Rail Trails Only" Avoiding cars and trucks, busy streets and highways was a goal of riding from the northern to the southern US borders (Canada and Mexico) . I am delighted to say I have ridden all the US latitudes, completing TAvRTO May 12, 2015. The original idea of TAvRTO was dreamed up while trekking to Mt. Everest Base Camp in 2005. Originally I was going to ride west to east but there weren't enough bicycle trails lengthwise to make a border to border crossing. However, there appeared to be enough north and south trails. The nice thing about bicycling, I was able get family and friends to join me Connie chauffeured me from one trail to another however, after she got lost near Onalaska, Wisconsin, spousal chauffeuring was over. Luckily I was able to get support from brother Don, friend Mark, and sons Chris and Geoff. |
