| Introduction | YUCA was started in 2006 when William Acevedo, a graphic designer born and raised in New York City's Lower East Side, felt the need to help youth from similar economically oppressed neighborhoods achieve direction, self-esteem, and success in life by fulfilling their creative potential. Holding an M.S. in design from Pratt Institute and more than twenty years experience in the communications design field, Acevedo recognized that too few youth from similar backgrounds were excelling in the graphic design industry. Furthermore, too few youth in underserved communities had access to organized out-of-school activity and mentoring to help them develop the skills that would allow them to apply successfully to advanced education or to compete in the employment marketplace. Acevedo started YUCA to give back to his community and to help young people achieve the same type of personal and professional success he has enjoyed. |
