Introduction | Valeriya N-Georg works with a range of media: drawing, printmaking, moving image and sculpture. However, printmaking is her primary process and the acid is the primary component that etches away at her images. The pleasure for her when drawing over the zinc plates is to treat the work like a journey, where serendipitous discoveries can be made along the way. Valeriya’s work comes from personal experience, imagination and memories. She uses the figurative drawings as an allegorical tool to explore conceptions of political allegorical thought and emancipation. Her works have a surreal, dreamlike quality, sometimes disturbing but thought-provoking taking the viewer in to her imaginary world. Growing up in the very prejudiced society of the Communist Bulgaria, where people live their lives in subordination of others, she explores freedom, as a subject that deserves our consideration, as something that is very valuable but we all tend to take for granted. The fight for freedom – political and personal is the main subject of her work, even the freedom of the mind to allow dreams to flow, the belief in the self and the possibility of a better life. |
