| Introduction | As a young gay man in my teens in the mid/late 80s I spent a lot of time hiding it out in the library. I wasn't part of the drama club or a jock. I virtually had no life. Pretty much a reject. I searched the card catalog for everything under 'gay' and 'homosexuality'. This led me to find books about socialism and communism, where, in theory, the gays were welcome. I declared myself a leftist. I parroted their talking points and cheered their leaders. Even as I found examples of leftists not being so friendly to the gays. Also, since I found gay culture to be very materialistic I found the alliance to be a bad fit if not hypocritical. However, my loyalties were set, hypocrisy be damned. It wasn't until I first read about multiculturalism in 1993 that I started to question my unwavering loyalty. The World Trade Center had just been hit [the first time] and I was angry that these savages had brought their barbarism to our liberal shores. That was also about the time that I first read about the Log Cabin Republicans. The seeds of discord had been planted and I was now aware of other views and options. It would be several more years, 2004, before I made the final break. |
