About me

Occupation Software Engineer
Location New Zealand
Introduction I was initially trained as an Electrical Engineer. In my 3rd Pro year I became intrigued with the possibilities of computing (back then there were NO personal computers). My final year project was researching and creating a tracking program for a solar array - in machine code. My first real job involved a mix of electrical engineering and software design creating control systems for anything from conveyors, to security and air conditioning. This introduced me to the joys of PLC - which is a fancy way of reproducing the old relay based logic. Later I was to apply the same tech at Freezing Works - conveyors again but also (yum) the Effluent Plant. There followed 15 years at LINC and then JADE. This time designing the software as well as applications - and some teaching and management stuff. This came to a halt after an illness which meant I could no longer watch the patterns dance in my head. Rather than giving up IT completely I switched to designing Office templates and writing VBA. These days I support a range of legacy software for a small pool of clients - in addition to VBA I code in PHP, ASP, SQL (in several flavours) as well as HTML & CSS.
