Scott Fitzgerald, it elaborates on how the American dream can affect people in negative and positive ways. As an example Myrtle explained: “I married him because I thought he was a gentleman…I thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn’t fit to lick my shoe.” (pg.34) When Nick was talking about why myrtle married Mr. Wilson if she they didn’t even get along and the two of them were not happy together. Fitzgerald appeals to emotions by having myrtle explain why she married and to help the reader understand some of the characters. During the event of the story Fitzgerald portrays Myrtle as an unhappy woman because of the man she married. The quote shows how not all of the characters get along and that not everyone is living the American dream. Knowing how the Wilson’s are unhappy with who they married, it shows how Fitzgerald is saying that to live the American dream one must first be happy. That is an example of how the American dream can be negative but there are other cases where it is a positive factor. |
| Favorite movies | Although the American dream can be bad or good it can also result in both. Near the end of the book after Gatsby had died the setting is described as: "Most of the big shore places were closed now and there were hardly any lights except the shadowy, moving glow of a ferryboat across the Sound…something commensurate to his capacity for wonder." (pg.180). It seemed as if once Gatsby had died the whole town seemed to follow with him, everything had died down losing its life. Fitzgerald appeals to emotion by making it seem like the town was Gatsby and once he died so did the town. Throughout the story Gatsby had lived a very happy and wealthy life, until one day when Tom confronted him about Daisey to the point where Gatsby felt like everything was going wrong and killed himself. The quote show how even if you start out wealth and happy it doesn’t mean it will end that way. This is a great example how the American dream is a double edged sword where it can be good and finish bad. |
| Favorite music | In the world some start out fourtanate while others don’t making the dream that much harder to achieve but for those who do get a head start in life, more oppertunities become open for that individual. Nick remembered: “Whenever you feel like criticizing any one...just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had.” (Pg. 2). This shows that Nick had a great start in life without as many struggles as others might have had to suffer to get where they were today. Fitzgerald appeals to the readers emotion by giving sympathy to the less fortunate and to always remember that there are others who aren’t as lucky as yourself. This quote explains how Nick grew up in a wealthy family with many oppertunities given to him. The effect on the quote shows readers that the author understands that some are born higher then others but to never let that give you reason to look down on others. It furthers the readers understanding to the American dream by showing that if you do start out wealth you have more advantages and might end up living happier. This was an example of a positive American dream but there is also a way how it can be a double edged sword with happy begainnings but unfortunate endings. |
