If mud is dirt plus water, what is clay?

Well, technically clay is part of dirt, or soil. So depending on the content of the sand, and silt in addition to the clay will depend on the type of dirt it is. Mud is formed in dirt when there is a lot more clay and silt in the soil than sand. Thus clay plus water is still mud, just a more sticky mud than gritty mud.
