| Introduction | Since 2007, the Brussels based interdisciplinary workspace for arts has been organising project residencies called 'Thematics'. Each edition we invite 4 to 6 artists to reflect upon a central theme. The central theme of our april/may edition 2010 is "Do It Yourself". Do it yourself (DIY Wikipedia) is a term used to describe building, modifying, or repairing something without the aid of experts or professionals. The theme “Do it yourself” in BC came as a reflection on artistic practices and the dependency of the arts on institutions. The necessity of creating independent events and set ups to unleash the creative power and visibility of ideas that may not fit conventional places. One can say that art practice functions implicitly on the “do it yourself”-mechanism and that this particular mechanism constitutes the motor of risk and challenge. DIY can be a tool to develop new modes of communication acting in the social and political realm. participating artists: Heike Langsdorf (D), Elke Van Campenhout (B), Nicolas Y Galleazi (CH), Joël Verwimp(B/D), Bavo Olbrechts (B), NG (FR) |
