| Introduction | My intention for this blog is to share and explore everything related to teaching and learning. After forty-years in the classroom I can honestly say that I have loved - almost - everyday of it! To me teaching, even with its considerable challenges, is the best profession in the world. | Favorite movies | There are many inspiring movies related to teaching. Though many are very well done, and often include classic scenes (tearing out the pages of the text in "Dead Poets Society" in 1989 for example) I personally find many of them depressing and damaging to the profession. A common theme is that the "great teacher" must be rejected and thoroughly abused by the system and often the students - at least at first. The teacher must bravely takes on all sorts of road blocks but will in the end "do it for the kids." OK, on an individual level perhaps this is heroic, however in a national arena this is no way to "fix" education. Sacrificing inspirational teachers (who never seem to last very long) is not a way to improve an educational system. When inspiring teachers get fired ("Dead Poets Society" - 1989), or have a heart attack and criticized for doing a good job ("Stand and Deliver" - 1997) it leaves the impression that teachers should expect to be abused, and threatened, especially by the "system."
