Introduction Someone once said "History does not repeat itself; historians oftentimes simply repeat each other." Such was the case regarding the history of Fort Amanda. For 200 years, writers have claimed that during the War of 1812, Colonel Thomas Poague built Fort Amanda and named it for his wife Amanda. Those claims are false. I have been researching the history of Fort Amanda for over 50 years and during that time discovered that the actual builder of the fort was Lt. Col. Robert Pogue who named it for his 12-year-old daughter Amanda. Because Thomas Poague was not the builder, there is no paper trail regarding details of the the fort which may explain why for 200 years details about the fort were merely speculation. On the other hand, Robert Poague did leave a paper trail and because of it, I’ve been able to identify more than 200 individuals associated with the forts history, including a journal describing life at the fort from Feb. – Aug. 1813 . In 2017, I published two books; "Fort Amanda - a Historical Redress" and "The Schillinger Journal" both of which provide details of the life at the fort as well as events happening elsewhere which
