Introduction For 200 years, writers have claimed that during the War of 1812, Colonel Thomas Poague built Fort Amanda and named it for his wife Amanda. Those claims are false. I have been researching the history of Fort Amanda for over 50 years and through family documents, discovered that the builder of the fort was Lt. Col. Robert Pogue and he named it for his 12-year-old daughter Amanda. Since Thomas Poague was not the builder, there is no paper trail regarding details of the the fort which may explain why for 200 years details about the fort were merely speculation. On the other hand, Robert Poague did leave a paper trail and because of it, I’ve been able to identify more than 200 individuals associated with the forts history, including a journal describing life at the fort. In 2017, I published two books; "Fort Amanda - a Historical Redress" and "The Schillinger Journal" both of which provide details of the life at the fort as well as events happening elsewhere thath affected life there and at home.
