| Introduction | After my youth in Upstate NY, then reading philosophy & religion at Amherst College, the idea of discovering the heart of the world grew within. In 1978, after working in the US Senate, I left for a couple of years exploring the world. Then along the coast of Kenya or admiring the cupolas of Istanbul, the plan changed. We fell into the wonder of the world, the grace of its people, the beauty of its landscape, the stimuli of a modern world and the innocence of travel. Since 1983 I've lived in Kathmandu. During this passage, I fell in love with my wife, Shakun. We've had three precious childreen, Joshua Shumshere, Ezra Man, and Leah Prajna Rose, who've brought us great happiness. We built a tranquil home on a hillside and planted more bamboo than we could have imagined. For 25 years, I've worked with marginalized communities, e.g., Dalits & indigenous peoples through rights and development initiatives. Save the Children, UNDP, the NHRC and the EC have supported me on these issues. On this blog, I look forward to sharing my perspective on the joys, turmoils and fascinations of one man's life. |
