Introduction I decided in my 40s, after a career, to go to grad school for six years. I graduated at 50, at the same time my son graduated from high school. He went to college in Monterey, CA, and I moved to a tenure track position in Michigan. I have been here for 9 years. I don't belong here, as a wise person once said, " You can take the girl out of California, but can't take the California out of the girl." He was so right. But I have learned about yet another part of the US. I have now lived in CA, NY, OK and MI, and it has come in handy. I recently completed a 5-year study and travel period for a book on a Sustainable Regional Geography of the US and Canada.(I traveled to every state and province I wrote about). And there are other advantages, I have found a wonderful mate, discovered kayaking, and I am close to Canada. What comes next? I am not ready to stop and retire. I went back to school so that I could be who I really am, a geographer, and I live and breathe it everyday, and love it. There is definitely more to come, and it looks to involve the state I now live in, Michigan. "Focus Michigan" is the future for our beleaguered state.
