Introduction I am a travel journalist in California. I have been publishing travel stories professionally since 1991, concentrating chiefly on Asia-Pacific and California. Before striking out on my own, I was a staff writer at the San Francisco Chronicle, covering international trade, media, tourism, hotels and airlines. Before that I was a staff writer at the San Francisco Examiner, where I wrote about movies, pop music, comedy and books. I have published articles in the Globe and Mail, Global Traveler, Chicago Sun-Times, Village Voice, Alaska Airlines Magazine, Napa Sonoma Magazine, Southwest Airlines Spirit, Toronto Star, New York Times Syndicate, Travel + Leisure and on Web sites TheStreet.com, MainStreet.com and Aviation.com. In an earlier life, I was editor of the Berkeley Barb weekly newspaper. I am author or co-author of five books, published in three countries (the USA, UK and Canada). I can't decide whether I write to support my travel habit or travel to support my writing habit.
