| Introduction | I was born 30 miles SE of Dodge City into the family that represented the blacksmithing trade of Ford County, KS. Blacksmithing, being on the wane, forced a career change that took us to Wichita and Boeing Aircraft which eventually resulted in a move to Seattle. Water wasn’t an influence in Kansas but became a major factor in my life growing up in Seattle. I learned to swim, walk logs, build, borrow and steal rafts. With two home-built dinghies, a hydroplane and a runabout I explored the lakes and shorelines of the Seattle area. When a friend introduced me to white water kayaks 40 years ago it stuck. I am currently working on putting together bits and pieces of a route from Olympia to Prince Rupert, BC. I don’t have time or desire to do it in one fell swoop so it’s a trip here and a trip there. When complete it will follow the outer Canadian west coast. In the meantime, it’s a collection of visits and learnings as time allows. As I go I am respectfully enjoying the magic northern waters at the pleasure of my gracious Canadian hosts. I am a member of Washington Water Trails Association and BC Marine Trails. |
