| Introduction | My family homesteaded an area just north of Sandpoint, and I grew up in Coeur d'Alene. I married my high school sweetheart, whose family homesteaded in Dalton Gardens. So far, we have spent 24 years raising four children right here in North Idaho. We also have 2 wonderful grandchildren. My wife and I started "hit-and-miss gardening" about ten years ago, and recently started taking classes and reading a lot about plant science. I am also facinated with the science of preserving foods and cooking. I started cannning just two years ago just to see if I could do it. I started with pickles and they were fantastic. I plan to get into pressure canning low acid foods and meats this year. And then there is beer. I stumbled upon home brewing about three years ago. I spent about six months studying and building up the nerve to try it. My first 2 beers were simple, but fantastic. And since then my beer is only getting better. I currently use simple techniques to brew my beers, but as I learn, I eventually hope to a brew a beer from all homegrown ingredients. The Pacific Northwest is a prime country for growing hops and barley. |
