Introduction | I was eight years old when a book, Hitty: Her First Hundred Years, swept me off my feet, seducing me into a life of reading and writing. Hitty, by Rachel Field, was written as a memoir, the first of that genre I had ever read. It was also my first exposure to a travel book and depicted the adventures of a doll named Hitty. At about the same age, I wrote my first story, a fictional “memoir” about an unfortunate pencil that endured challenging predicaments when her owner nibbled at her eraser and lost her in a field of tall grass. So it’s no surprise that I’ve continued my childhood habit by writing Seeing for Myself: A Political Traveler’s Memoir. I am intrigued by “hotspots” such as Colombia, Iraq, Kenya and Afghanistan as well as traveling solo – to Mexico, Guatemala, and South Africa. This blog includes excerpts from Seeing for Myself, as well as travel stories that are not included in the book. I call the blog “NiCarthy Adventures” to allow for posting about other kinds of explorations: mental, emotional and ethical. I hope the blog will trigger your imagination and add to the adventures in your life. I welcome guest bloggers. |
