InterestsA. Background. The progress of humanity at this current point in modern history depends in part on our understanding of our cultural history. Through the cultural arts, we see where humanity is now positioned and where it has the potential to go in the future. Therefore, it is easy to answer the question, 'What do the cultural arts do for us?' The Cultural Arts represent the Spirit of Community. With the changes that humanity has experienced in modern times, cultural traditions are constantly in danger of being erased from our collective memory. In Indonesia, the Dutch occupation began the process of cultural erosion in the archipelago, and the process continues as Indonesia modernizes to keep up with the economically powerful nations of the world. The answer to preserving Indonesia's culture is not to place blame on modernized nations. The answer lies within cooperation and celebration together. Culture begins and ends with community, and therefore it is essential that the cultures of the world, both east and west, work together to preserve each others' cultural heritages. The spiritual strength of culture is community, which will mean that our nations come together to celebrate that which we hold dear to us as our generational heritage. It is within this spirit that the presentation of 'Art Across Two Cultures: East and West' will be held as a celebration of both cultures from the East and the West.
