Introduction The Jew of Malta was a play written by Christopher Marlowe in England near the end of the 16th century. The protagonist was an unlikeable Jew named Barabas, and he embodied and perpetuated many anti-Semitic stereotypes eminent in Elizabethan Europe. "Balta" is short for Baltimore, though also references the village in Ukraine, ironically the birthplace of many esteemed Park Heights JCC members.
