Introduction I spent 43 years as a reporter and editor in NC, Florida, Washington DC and Wichita Ks. and authored three books on journalism, "Public Journalism and Public Life," "The Two W's of Journalism" (with Max McCombs), and, most recently, "Knightfall: Knight Ridder and How the Erosion of Newspaper Journalism is Putting Democracy at Risk." My newspaper experience: --The Charlotte Observer, as sports writer, government reporter, city editor, national editor and Washington correspondent. --The Boca Raton News, as editor. --The Knight Ridder Washington Bureau as news editor. --The Wichita Eagle as editor for 23 years. As a developer of the Public Journalism idea, I consulted with Knight Ridder in that field for two years and did lectures and seminars on the subject in more than seventy U.S. cities and a dozen foreign countries. After "retiring" from daily journalism, I have taught Media Ethics and seminars in Journalism and Democracy at the University of Kansas and Wichita State University.
